A specialist HS2 engineering team has moved a 112m long, 1,631 tonne steel structure over a section of Lawley Middleway – part of Birmingham’s ring road, four days ahead of schedule.

The operation was successfully delivered by HS2’s main works contractor in the West Midlands, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and their bridge move contractor Mammoet.

To minimise disruption to road users, the huge span was moved during night-time road closures - moving between 18 and 24 metres every night using a special skidding system - ensuring that the road has remained open during the day.

HS2 has completed a major river enhancement in Warwickshire, which at 749 metres is the most significant realignment of a natural river on the project.

The re-naturalisation of the River Cole near Coleshill in Warwickshire will improve the existing river environment by creating more meander bends and enhancing habitats in the river and along its banks to maximise biodiversity.

The landscape of North Nottinghamshire is forever changed following the successful demolition of eight giant cooling towers at Cottam power station on August 14.

Cottam power station was a former coal fired power station in Nottinghamshire ceasing operations in 2019. At its peak it was capable of generating enough electricity for approximately 3.7 million UK homes and employed 750 people.

The explosive event, a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of cooling towers demolished in one go, was witnessed by former employees of the coal fired power station.

Hinkley Point C is developing proposals for a new temporary accommodation campus next to Junction 24 of the M5 Motorway. The campus on Notaro Way near Huntworth would be made of modular accommodation blocks and feature a restaurant, bar, gym, shop and lounge areas. The site would also have a 700-space car park, as well as 200 cycle and 15 motorbike spaces.

A dedicated bus service will transport workers to and from the Hinkley Point C site.

A four-year Embedded Engineering Resource Framework has been renewed with seven companies

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has renewed its multimillion-pound Embedded Engineering Resource Framework (“the Framework”) with seven companies. The renewal follows a successful four-year supply of a breadth of engineering resources to UKAEA in support of its mission to deliver fusion energy.

A historic reactor complex has been demolished, creating a new skyline at Harwell site - the birthplace of pioneering nuclear research and innovation.

The complex originally housed the UK’s first fast fission reactor Zephyr, followed by Dimple - a multi-purpose, zero power, water moderated reactor. These played a central role in providing the data measurements used to support the first generation of nuclear reactor designs.  In its latter years, the building hosted research into prosthetic limbs and vehicle emissions under AEA Technology. 

More good jobs unlocked for workers across North Wales and North West England as Britain’s carbon capture industry goes from strength to strength.

This will support a total of 2,800 direct, skilled jobs in total – such as engineers and construction workers – and unlock growth and investment right across the HyNet network, which spans Cheshire and Flintshire.  

Around 200 oil and gas workers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will be offered tailored support to seize clean energy job opportunities.

The Oil and Gas Transition Training Fund, backed by £900,000 of UK Government funding, will help build the pipeline of skilled workers needed to make Britain a clean energy superpower as part of the government’s Plan for Change.
