The Head of Commercial is responsible for leading the commercial and procurement strategy across a portfolio of nuclear and defence contracts. This senior leadership role shapes the strategic direction of commercial activity, ensuring robust lifecycle value, effective risk management, and strong alignment with organisational objectives. The role requires a deep commercial background, exceptional stakeholder‑influencing skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners.
Strategic Leadership & Commercial Direction
- Shape and define business needs to ensure commercial strategies align with organisational priorities.
- Develop and manage a forward‑looking procurement pipeline that supports long‑term delivery.
- Lead supply market analysis and early market engagement to inform commercial approaches.
- Develop and evaluate commercial options that balance risk, value for money, and strategic outcomes.
Business Case & Procurement Governance
- Own the commercial case within Outline Business Cases, ensuring clarity, rigour, and alignment with programme objectives.
- Work closely with sourcing and contract management teams to maintain strategic intent throughout the sourcing lifecycle.
- Oversee bid evaluation and supplier selection processes.
- Ensure effective contract terms are applied and integrated into delivery strategies.
Contract Lifecycle Management
- Embed effective contract management strategies to support successful delivery and performance.
- Collaborate with contract management leads to maintain strategic alignment throughout the commercial lifecycle.
- Capture and apply lessons learned to strengthen future procurement and commercial strategies.
Team Leadership & Capability Development
- Recruit, develop, and lead a high‑performing commercial team capable of delivering a complex portfolio.
- Provide coaching, direction, and professional development to enhance commercial capability across the function.
Portfolio Oversight & Compliance
- Provide oversight of all procurements within the portfolio, ensuring consistency, compliance, and value.
- Uphold probity and ethical standards, including compliance with the Modern Slavery Act, subcontractor payment requirements, and anti‑bribery and corruption policies.
- Work with senior contract management leads to ensure appropriate contract management mechanisms are embedded into commercial strategies.
Continuous Improvement & Strategic Influence
- Identify opportunities to improve commercial processes, tools, and governance.
- Influence senior stakeholders across the business to drive adoption of best‑practice commercial approaches.
