The Delegated Design Authority supports the Strategy, Interfaces & Packages Design Authority Leads by providing technical integration, oversight, governance, and approval for work relating to future waste disposal strategy, waste packages, and associated facilities. Operating as a senior technical authority, the role ensures that design intent is properly defined, controlled, and delivered in accordance with organisational arrangements, regulatory expectations, and best‑practice nuclear design principles.
Design Authority Governance & Compliance
- Discharge Design Authority responsibilities in line with waste arrangements, consistent with INSAG‑19 guidance, ONR expectations, and requirements covering both conventional and post‑closure safety.
- Coordinate technical oversight and governance activities on behalf of the Head of Design Authority & Technical Control.
- Ensure changes to design intent and technical baselines are properly controlled, reviewed, and sentenced.
Technical Integration & Requirements Management
- Oversee the generation, management, and approval of requirements within relevant technical areas.
- Review and accept in‑house and externally produced designs, ensuring all aspects—including safety, cost, operability, and maintainability—have been fully considered.
- Maintain visibility of design maturity and ensure alignment with programme strategy and technical baselines.
Strategic Advice & Stakeholder Support
- Provide authoritative technical advice to programme and strategy stakeholders, identifying essential or beneficial design interventions.
- Maintain an overview of buildability, operability, and maintainability considerations, advising Duty Holders of any issues or risks.
- Use in‑house subject matter experts where appropriate to support decision‑making and technical assurance.
Delegated Responsibilities
- Undertake delegated authority for specific artefacts, topics, or subject areas as agreed with the relevant Design Authority Lead, based on experience, skills, and technical knowledge.
